About
For generations the women in Northumberland have played an important role in our community – our heroines are Grace Darling who in 1826 at the age of 22 took to the wild North Sea in a small rowing boat to rescue survivors from the SS Forfarshire; and Emily Davison, the famous suffragette who on 4 June 1913 threw herself in front of King George V’s horse at the Epsom Derby trying to pin the Suffragette rosette to his horse. Our heritage is based on women who are brave, bold and enterprising.
Northumberland’s ‘Be Digital – Women and Broadband Challenge’ project, funded by Government Equalities Office, will celebrate the achievements of women from past generations and the many inspiring stories of Northumberland’s women in business today, whilst also recognising the emerging culture and importance of ‘digital’ both in our workplaces and in our enterprise growth. Through a programme of training and support we want to inspire and enable our women to be part of the story of our distinctive county and play a part in shaping the future of a Digital Northumberland.
